Issues - Ireland

The experience of living in Ireland has changed immeasurably since the advent of the Celtic Tiger. Children in primary and secondary school today have never known an Ireland without a booming economy.

In that same period, South Africa has been going through its own remarkable changes. Today’s South African school children face many challenges but, unlike their parents, apartheid is not one of them.

Thankfully, hedge schools, emigration and malnutrition are something Irish school children learn about only in history. Amawele’s twinning programme is a way of helping them to develop an appreciation of their good fortune and a better understanding of the world around them.

Amawele does not simply consist of ‘Irish’ and ‘South African’ schools. Each school within the growing community has its own circumstances, location and story to tell.

Primarily, Amawele is a channel of communication. Amawele liaises between schools, provides resources through the members area of the website, a schools information pack and wall planner and the opportunity to organise talks and events.
